The Black Literature Project is a social enterprise founded by Reanna Teape in 2024, shortly after she completed her MA in Black British literature at Goldsmiths University. Her passion and dedication to changing the narrative of stories told in and outside the classroom has been something she has been committed to within her teaching profession.
Through the Black Literature Project, we educate, empower, and celebrate the works and contributions of British writers of colour in education, communities, and British culture. We work with and alongside educators, policymakers, librarians and non-traditional communities to create and organise events, workshops and specialised talks in corporate and educational spaces.
Learn what drives us
The Black Literature Project's mission is to celebrate the works of Black British authors, advocate for equity in education, and provide culturally responsive teaching to all.
To create a society where every young person has equal access to quality education and the opportunity to learn about and appreciate the contributions of Black British authors.
Work with us to change the narrative inside and outside the classroom and to work towards a diverse and inclusive education
We provide LIT boxes for educators of KS3, KS4 and Post 16+, each box contains books that are suitable for students aged 11 to 18 years old. You can either select the book title or you can entrust us to select the books. Our range of books is constantly changing but we understand the necessity of educating and empowering educators to make the change they want to see.
We provide reviews and consulting on lessons and schemes of work that feature Black British texts. To make sure the consultation is as useful as possible, we would need to know: your lesson goals, age group and key stage of your students, specific texts or themes you are planning to cover, lesson outcomes and skills you’re aiming to develop through these texts (for example critical thinking, cultural awareness, or analysis of literary devices). We can offer tailored guidance on approaches, discussion questions, activities, and assessment ideas with this information! Please fill and complete the form to book a consultation and we will get back to you as soon as possible
We provide specialised virtual talks to departments within schools, libraries and other communities about Black British literature, culture, racism and other issues that impact non-white communities in the UK. Please fill out and complete the form to book a talk and we will get back to you as soon as possible
The Black Literature Project is working to create specialised Black Literature workshops to deliver outside of schools, in partnership and collaboration with local libraries. If you are a library who are looking to partner with us or an educator who is interested in these sessions for your school, please sign up to be notified when these sessions will be available
